Chinese New “Year of the Dog” Observance – March 4th

In 2018, the Lunar New Year occurs on February 16th; however, we’re extending the festivities by observing it this Sunday, March 4th.

CULTURAL SNAPSHOT

Traditional customs focus on special preparations like a thorough cleaning of the house and settling one’s debts. Each family’s entire household will in turn gather for dinner to observe the closing of the old year.

The new year begins with small visitations to exchange greetings and small gifts between friends and colleagues to renew relationships over the many days this holiday is celebrated. Finally, the full family gathers together again for dinner to welcome in “The New Lunar Year”.

CELEBRATE WITH ST. THOMAS

As 2018 ushers in the year of the Dog, we will observe this important cultural event with a special presentation on the Lunar New Year by the Sunday School classes during the mid morning (10:30 AM) worship service.

CULTURAL DISPLAYS

Join us in Cowans Hall following morning services for special Chinese treats and refreshments during coffee hour.

Enjoy sampling as you explore captivating displays showcasing the “Year of the Dog” Chinese Lunar New Year. Have fun while learning more about how this ancient Chinese tradition is celebrated.

Back by popular demand, the Boys Scouts will again be serving-up this year’s all-you-can-eat pancake feast of plain and blueberry pancakes hot off-the-griddle with a side of ham and all the fixings plus juice, coffee, and tea.

Donations for the pancake brunch are $2 per person, $1 per child (age 6-12), or $5 per family.

Proceeds after expenses will go to the Boy Scouts’ Activities Fund.

So come one and come all to enjoy warm fellowship, hot cakes and support the scouts at Saint Thomas!
